Shower curtains are such a focal point in the bathroom - they are often the largest surface we see as we enter the room so you really want to make them stand out and enhance your bathroom.
Unfortunately, there are a limited number of ready made shower curtain options that you can buy so you can't always find something suitable. However, if you make your own shower curtains you can really get something unique which suits your bathroom, your style and your personality.
If you can't find what you are looking for in the stores or online then why not have a go at making your own - you only really need to be able to sew straight lines so they are easy for even novice sewers.
Here's how to choose a pleasing design to make yourself
1. Choose a Fabric
Fabric needs to be washable (so you can freshen it up regularly) but it doesn't have to be waterproof. (You can buy a shower curtain liner and use that inside the bathtub while your designer curtain hangs outside). Find a fabric you really love that will make your bathroom look great - something colorful, something funky, something cheerful, something elegant, something vintage, something classic - whatever suits the style of your bathroom and the mood you want to create.
2. Choose a Heading
You can use the same headings that are available for any curtains such as pleats or ruffles for a classic look or simple eyelets for a more modern, funky or fun style.
3. Think about Accents
Ad the curtain is such a large expanse you can think about adding accents such as a contrasting border top and bottom or (washable) trimmings. You could sew on colored buttons, sequins, or decorative appliques. Borders or trimmings are a great way of picking out a color from a patterned fabric you may want to use in towels or other bathroom accessories.
4. Consider the Curtain Rings
Choose curtain rings which are in keeping with the style you have selected. Do you want classic metal rings or fun, funky and colorful plastic ones. Be sure to design the whole look not just the curtain. You may also wish to change your shower curtain rod if it is not in keeping with your design.
