One drawback to owning a vintage claw foot bathtub can be the lack of having a shower. The other option is to have the exposed pipes that are mounted directly on the tub. The latter is the most common choice and there are some various decorative styles that make the exposed pipes and knobs have a nice finished look.

There are several "do-it-yourself" options available for those who are willing to take on the task themselves. Home improvement stores such as Lowes and Home Depot carry various kits that are predesigned to fit most claw foot tubs. There are shower kits designed to work with existing pipes and others that add the exposed pipes to the freestanding tub. Both types of kits are affordable, easy to install and only require the use of a few basic tools. Both Lowes and Home Depot have staff in the plumbing department that can make some recommendations based on the set up that you currently have. Still, it might help to get someone who is familiar with plumbing to help out or the check the job once it is complete.

Regardless of the type of shower option you choose, you can easily add a shower to your claw foot tub to make it more convenient and useful. This will allow you to have the best of both worlds, a nice large tub to take a long, leisurely bath or a shower that you can use quickly and efficiently thus making your bathroom more functional and enjoyable.

They usually consist of a hollow rod or tube which has to be cut to the right length and then it is mounted on both ends with mounting brackets. These type of rods are usually much sturdier than the temporary rods, so you don't have to worry about how heavy the curtains are, or any thing else that you hang there.

Which ever curtain rod that you choose will depend a lot on your situation. If you are a renter you may want to go with the temporary rods just because they are easier to put in and take down. If you are a home owner or a long term renter you may want the more permanent rods just for their durability.

How To Install A Clawfoot Shower Curtain

Adding a clawfoot shower curtain to your existing clawfoot bathtub is not nearly as hard as it used to be and adds versatility to your tub. In the past, the curtain was the big drawback. Because of the supports for the enclosure ring, you had to hang several panels leaving gaps that could let water spray all over your bathroom. However, new designs have eliminated that problem and have made adding a clawfoot shower curtain a definite positive addition.

My wife and I own an old Victorian built in 1909 so when it came time to remodel one of the bathrooms, ripping out the pink 1950s tub and replacing it with a traditional clawfoot was a no brainer. The problem was that while my wife prefers to sit down and relax in the tub, I would rather jump in, take a quick shower and get out. After a couple of times trying to sit down and use a hand held shower without getting water all over the bathroom, and failing, I decided that the shower enclosure had to go up.

I did the installation myself and was surprised how easy it was. I ordered an oval enclosure, to keep with the lines of the tub, that came with the shower head, plumbing and brackets for the installation. It only had three points I had to mount. Two were on the back wall and one on the ceiling.

I briefly played with the idea of using standard shower curtains and hanging two or three, but remembering the mess I made in the bathroom with the hand held shower head, I quickly decided to look into a specifically designed clawfoot shower curtain. This was definitely a wise move on my part. I found a clawfoot curtain that was 180" and easily pulled all the way around the tub. Looking back, I'm so glad I didn't go with three panels of standard curtains. The one I bought is a single piece and, with the magnets in the hem, keeps me from flooding the bathroom every time I take a shower.

All in all, I'm very happy with the look and functionality of the change to a clawfoot tub with addition of the clawfoot shower curtain. I can still jump in and out of the shower with no problem and my wife can relax in her new, and much larger, clawfoot tub. She even likes to pull the curtain closed while she take a bath to keep the steam in.

A nautical bathroom decor is not always a boat wheel hanging on the wall and a lighthouse nightlight in the corner. Mixing and matching these colors is great fun and can have a real impact on a room with the right accessories. Many of the colors will complement each other, just as they do at the shore. For example, sea foam green will look good with sandy brown and sunny yellow goes well with the sky blue.
