Walk in Shower Sizes

Walk in Shower Sizes

Many home renovators are asking the same question - is a 34 inch shower too narrow? And what about floor trays that are as small as 32"? Is it really a walk in shower if it's less than 37 inches?

Walk in Shower Sizes

Older shower enclosures may have been adequate at 32"x 48" with a 24" door, but most people will find these dimensions claustrophobic, in fact in many places there is a building code that makes it mandatory a shower be at least 30 inches wide. Two inches more than what is required by a builder's code, especially if the walls are solid, covered in tile and perhaps the only glass is a small door, is indeed a small shower enclosure.

Open Showers with Space and No Splash

However the main concern about a walk in shower is not the exact dimensions of it, but how it feels inside. How much light does it have? Does it have the illusion of space? That illusion of light and space can be achieved by using glass panels, glass blocks for walls or simply leaving the space open. The idea of a totally open shower stall scares many people away from a wonderful experience because they fear splashing.

Yet the key to an open style walk in shower is the flooring of the bathroom - waterproof teak, natural stone or nonskid tile flooring will solve this problem because the small amount of spray will not matter as much. And unless there will be body jets that spray horizontally out from the back walls, most vertical shower heads will cause minimal splash.

The keys to having an open shower without splash are twofold, the drainage and the way the floor of the shower is built. Where is your drain located and is the floor properly slanted or slightly elevated? Make sure the curb top has a slope back towards the central shower drain. Also a drain can be placed elsewhere in the bathroom, not just under the shower.

How to Tile a Shower - 6 Steps to Take Before You Start

How to Tile a Shower - 6 Steps to Take Before You Start

When learning how to tile a shower, there are several things that you have to consider. This is not a project that a first time do-it-yourselfer can usually tackle without help. A lot of preparation goes into a leak-free shower. Therefore you should consider a few things before you get started. Let's look at six things that are important.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4111/4951491470_bccf159ce0_m.jpg

How to Tile a Shower - 6 Steps to Take Before You Start

The first thing to think about is what kind of tile to get. You definitely want a good quality tile in your shower. This is not usually the place to put the bargain basement $.39 tile that you found on the street corner. A shower is such small square footage that you can get / square foot tile and it won't cost you that much. Make sure it's something that you like and won't mind looking at every day for several years. It's probably a good idea to get a porcelain tile as well. They absorb less moisture than ceramic and in an area that's going to be wet every day, that's probably a good idea.

Another item to consider is the demolition of the existing shower. What kind of base are you starting from? Do you have a shower that you can get out easily or will it require some help? It's best to rip out the existing shower and get it down to the studs. Starting from scratch is how to tile a shower the right way.

How to Tile a Shower - 6 Steps to Take Before You Start

You'll need to select a vapor barrier as well. Despite what some people believe, tile is not waterproof. If you just put tile on the wall, you are asking for a really big mess in the future. Something has to protect the wall from the moisture and it isn't going to be the tile itself.

After you choose a vapor barrier you'll need to get some cement backer board as well. This is what you will actually lay the tile on. If you don't you're asking for trouble. It gives you a sturdy base on which to install the tile. It's a lot like installing drywall in that you cut it to fit and screw it on.

Make sure you have the proper materials besides the tile as well. You'll need thin-set and grout as well. To do a proper job you'll also need a grout sealer after the job is done. It's best to get all of the materials before you get started. This way there won't be any delays in getting the job done.

The last thing to remember before you start installing is to bring the right tools to the job. It's best if you have a wet-saw to cut the tile with. You'll need something to cut the cement board, trowels, buckets, spacers, and a few other items to do a good job. Without the proper tools, you won't be able to install the shower properly. The last thing anyone wants is a leaky shower. There's nothing worse than thinking you knew how to tile a shower and then find a leak. The best way to avoid this all together is with the proper planning.

Shower Floor Pans Repair Made Fast And Easy

Shower Floor Pans Repair Made Fast And Easy

Shower floor pans develop leaks several ways. Sometimes the only way to fix the problem is to tear out the old shower pan and install a new shower pan and liner. But there are at least two other ways you can sometimes fix a leaky tile shower.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2076/5795292569_07fb6f959a_m.jpg

Shower Floor Pans Repair Made Fast And Easy

There is a method to fix shower leaks by injecting epoxy through the floor of the shower. The injected epoxy forms a waterproof layer under the tile shower floor. I understand that injecting epoxy evenly under the shower floor could stop a leak. But I worry that you don't know where the epoxy actually is going. If epoxy runs toward the shower drain under the floor, the pan won't drain properly and you may not know it. Any structural problems caused by leaks aren't fixed either.

Shower Curtain

Shower Floor Pans Repair Made Fast And Easy

Maybe the epoxy injection method has a place but any savings over actually rebuilding the shower pan may disappear over time. It's just postponing a real repair.

Shower Floor Pans Repair Made Fast And Easy

Shower Floor Pans Repair Made Fast And Easy

Another approach, short of rebuilding a shower pan, is doing spot repairs. When I recently had a shower leak, I called our local tile guru. He suggested looking for grout problems and then sealing any grout breaks with silicone. I eventually had the shower pan rebuilt, but that may have been unnecessary. Read on to find out why!

Grout in shower floor pans is not waterproof, unless an epoxy grout, like Spectralock is used. Water leaks through the grout to the shower pan liner beneath and then flows down the liner to the shower drain. That's the design. Over a long period of time, the water seeping through the grout causes grout deterioration. The grout can crumble, crack and fail.

One step you really should take is to seal your shower floor grout to help repel water. This will prolong the life of the grout. This normal maintenance is often overlooked.

If you have cracked grout causing a leak, you should evaluate the damage. If you have a crawl space under the shower pan, it's easy to see what happened. Is there mold or rot? How much? Minor problems will look better if you stop that leak and let everything dry. Maybe you need some expert advice before you decide what to do. If the subfloor is still solid underneath, you may not need a complete replacement.

Many times the grout failures are in corners of the shower and the water is leaking over the existing shower pan liner so the pan hasn't actually failed. The water is running outside the shower pan liner. If the shower pan is still good, fixing the leak may be all you need to do.

Here's how to proceed. First, let the shower dry completely. Then regrout or seal the cracks with silicon caulk.

If you choose to regrout, get a tile grout saw and remove the damaged grout as much as possible. Then work in new grout with a rubber grout trowel. Go over all the grout especially in the corners and the floor to make sure it's all sound. Clean the tile and seal after it's dry and you're ready to try your shower pan liner repair.

If you just seal with silicone, make very sure the area is dry and work in plenty of silicone. That's after you've used your grout saw and removed damaged grout. The challenge in sealing a leak with caulk is getting the caulk down in the grout grooves. It's hard to do especially with narrow grooves!

Carefully watch for shower leaks after your repair and you should soon know whether your repair worked.

How to Install a Shower Faucet in 7 Easy Steps

Installing a shower faucet is not a herculean task. If you know the right tricks it is as easy as conjuring up a rabbit in mid-air. Here is how to install a shower faucet in 7 easy steps.

How to Install a Shower Faucet in 7 Easy Steps

How to Install a Shower Faucet in 7 Easy Steps

Before starting the installation here are few things you need to take care.

Check the supply pipe for leaks. Replace wall with moisture resistance dry wall as base for wall covering. Always clean the pipe thread and apply a new pipe joint compound. Run hot and cold water lines to shower mixing valve attached. Plan for a trap door in wall.

These are just a few pointers you need to take care before installation. Now let us begin the installation.

First you can connect the shower in two ways. You can either choose the conventional method with copper pipes or you can opt for PEX pipes. The plastic pipes are easy to install when compared to the copper pipes. The next thing you need to do is the shut off the water supply and drill a hole in the shower walls with a hole saw. It is better to plan before hand where to install the shower and the faucet and mark them with a pencil. Now position the valve so that UP indication points upward and then connect the hot and cold water pipes to each side of the valve. When welding them take care to see that overheating does not take place. You can also use welding adapters if required. Secure the valve inside the wall and connect the raise tube and spout pipe in welded adapters. If valve is without spout then use a brass cap to block the outlet that will not be used. Put the shower in place. This completes the installation of the valve. Next to install the faucet handle slide the decorative plate in the valve and position the handle screw adapter on cartridge using hexagonal key. Now to install the shower head connect the upper outlet to shower head supply pipe after applying Teflon tape. Wrap clockwise the shower head's pipe filets with Teflon tape. Manually screw shower head using adjustable wrench. Finally to install the spout turn the spout on copper pipe so that set screw faces up. Tighten the screw with hexagonal key and then turn spout to normal position. Last but not the least open the hot and cold water supply and check if there is no leak. Next open the faucet to lukewarm position to release all the air caught in the pipes.

That's it. You are done. Now you can show off your skills to your wife or your neighbor.

Christmas Shower Curtain

Christmas shower curtains can be fun to make at home. This is especially a wonderful idea for people with kids who want to have some fun with. All you have to do is buy a plain fabric in a color that you prefer and decorate using waterproof paints or fabric paints. You can cut out different designs of shapes like stars angels and then sticking them onto the fabric, you might be very amazed by what you come up with finally.

When choosing Christmas shower curtains, it is advisable to go for waterproof fabrics and those treated with biocide that makes them resistant to mold and mildew. Mold and mildew is caused by accumulation of soap scum. But in cases where the fabric is not treated, oxygen bleach comes in handy. The bleach helps eliminate tiny Air-borne mold spores that stick to fabric fibers. Shower fabrics are supposed to be water repellent and therefore should be treated with a water repellent finish. This should be taken into consideration when looking to buy Christmas shower curtains since this makes sure that the shower curtain remains dry by allowing water to drip off without being absorbed.

When buying Christmas shower curtains, it is a great idea to buy accessories matching them. These accessories can include Christmas themed bath towels, soap dispensers and floor rugs. There are also hooks for your curtains that are designed to fit the Christmas season. For instance, little Snowman hooks can make you curtain set complete and beautiful. There are as many accessories to match up your curtains as there is in choosing your Christmas shower curtains.

Therefore, it is wise to look around and bargain till you get a perfect choice of Christmas shower curtains for your bathroom. Taking your time to shop will lead you to stores with great offers and you could find ones to sell them to you as a set which is cheaper and efficient.

Popular Bathroom Tile Shower Designs

Popular Bathroom Tile Shower Designs

When selecting the ideal shower design for your bathroom, there are several aspects of the project to consider before a final decision is made. Firstly, how large is your bathroom? If you have a small sized bathroom, you will not want to overwhelm it with a large tile design. Doing this will only make the bathroom appear smaller and will throw off the balance of the bathroom. After all, that is what you are looking for isn't it?

On the other hand, if your bathroom is so massive that you can hear a slight echo when words are spoken, the worst thing you can possibly do is to pick a shower tile design that is too small and intricate. Intricate designs work best with small bathrooms, and vice versa. As a rule of thumb, keep your bathroom tile shower design proportionate with the overall size of the bathroom.

Here are some of the most popular bathroom tile shower designs:

Glass

As of late, glass bathroom tile shower designs are becoming more and more popular. The most up and coming variation of glass tile is called the "mosaic" effect. The mosaic effect is made up of thousands of tiny square glass tiles, usually in a variation of shades within the same base color. Glass tiled showers also attract the eco-activists because glass tiles are often composed of recycled glass. Aside from granite, glass tiles are by far the most expensive bathroom tile shower design of the bunch.

Subway

Subway tiles may very well fall into the retro category; however subway tiles have remained one of the most popular shower design options for over half a decade. If applied correctly, shower tiles are the most seamless and clean-lines options available. Want another reason to choose subway tiles for your shower re-tiling? They are by far the most cost effective shower tiling solution.

Granite

Since the turn of the 21st century, it seems that the design pros have been obsessed with granite tiles, and not just for the bathroom. Interior designers love to use granite tiles as kitchen and bathroom counters, kitchen and bathroom floors, kitchen backdrops and of course, as shower tiles. The nation has spoken; the most luxurious option for bathroom tiles is granite. Yes, granite tiles in a shower look extremely lavish in a shower, however this beauty will come with a hefty price TAG. Using granite is the most expensive shower tiling solution.

Curtain Ideas - How to Make Curtains the Easy Way

1. You know your room needs redecorating and bringing up to date.

2. You have windows that are the wrong size for ready made curtains.

3. Or you simply can't find the right color or design.

So you keep putting it off because it's going to cost big money to get them custom made.

Well it doesn't have to break the bank to turn your curtain ideas into reality. So what kind of window treatMents am I talking about that are made to measure and don't cost a fortune. Well they are called "Wave curtains" because they hang into pleats that fold in to a wave shape.

They are a really modern and contemporary style but can fit in most homes depending on the fabric they are made from. The beauty of this style of curtains is,

1. The look obviously.

2. The way they fall naturally into their special "wave pleats" when they are either open or closed. No more time Dressing your curtains every time you move them.

So your probably thinking how do you get them for so little. The answer is simple "You make them yourself".

This is the point your finger heads for the back button, well stop right there.

Don't panic, you don't need to sew or even know a thing about curtains. It's so simple anyone can do this (even a grown man like me). How do I know, have I read about it somewhere and decided to share it with you.

No I have been there done it and have the evidence hanging in my own home. I have also written up full simple step by step instructions with photos. So you can repeat it yourself with no big expenses. Most people have the tools they need to make these around their homes already. If you need anything it won't cost you much, or you can borrow it from family or neighbors.

The only things you will need are the fabric to make your "wave curtains" and the stuff to create the header and seams.

So your asking how do you make curtains like this. Well the first step is:

1. Side seams and hem are created using fusible web tape. The stuff you use to re-hem a skirt or trousers. You fix this with a domestic steam iron, the kind we all have at home. Believe me if you apply this tape properly it sticks rock solid. You will find it very difficult to pull the fabrics apart.

2. The header that creates the wave effect on the top of your curtains is created using fusible 5 or 6 inch wide buckram. This stuff again is fixed in place using a steam iron. Again it sticks really well.

3. Finally you will need pin hooks to hang this style of curtain. These hooks pierce the fabric and buckram allowing you to put them exactly where they are needed.

That in a nutshell is how it all works. They are super easy and can be made to fit any size window. So have a go yourself and turn these curtain ideas in a reality.

Building Shower Pans - 7 Steps!

Building Shower Pans - 7 Steps!

Building shower pans is something you can learn to do. Building shower pans is a great skill to learn or maybe you just want to understand how it's done.

Building Shower Pans - 7 Steps!

Building Shower Pans - 7 Steps!

Building Shower Pans - 7 Steps!

Building Shower Pans - 7 Steps!

Building Shower Pans - 7 Steps!

Here are the basic steps for building shower pans.

1. RepAir damage.

If you're replacing a shower pan, fix damaged places. Usually you find damage to the sub floor around the shower floor pan. Remove and replace rotted material. If water has harmed walls or ceilings in floors below, repAir that at the same time. To avoid these problems in the future, shower floor pans must be built properly. You can do it right yourself.

2. Rough in shower drain base.

Tile floors are not water-proof. They're water-resistant. Exposed grout and mortar absorbs some water. Mix the mortar properly, or it will crumble and fail over time. Also, there are different grades of mortar. Consult your dealer or read the package directions to make sure you have the right grade for your application.

It's very important that the shower drain be properly installed. The water that weeps into the mortar must reach the drain. Rough in the drain base here.

3. Build the shower floor pan mortar base.

Build your shower floor slope now. The slope moves the water to the drain which prevents mold, fungus and odors caused by standing water. Build a two inch thick base sloping toward the drain. Let the base cure before the next step.

4. Shower pan liner membrane and drain top.

A waterproof shower pan liner membrane goes on top of the mortar base. The shower pan membrane is a rubber-like material and is waterproof and resistant to household chemicals. The membrane extends up the sides of the shower wall several inches. Folding the liner in the corners is a trick to building shower pans!

5. Install the second shower pan liner mortar bed.

Install a second layer of mortar over the liner membrane and reinforce with wire.

6. Build the shower curb.

Build any threshold forms and pour mortar mix to establish the shape.

7. Install your ceramic tile.

When the second coat of mortar cures, install a coat of thinset.

Then install your tile. Let the thinset cure and then you can install the grout.

Now laying tile is an art, but there are tricks you can use to get your joints even and get your cuts done right.

Tricks for building shower pans:

There are several places to make mistakes and a lot of questions can come up when building shower pans.

Such as:

How do I build a threshold?

How do I get the right amount of fall in the floor?

How is the pan attached to the drain?

What kind of mud is best and how do I mix it?

How do I get the liner in the corners?

How do I run the pan up the walls?

What about making cuts? What kind of saw is best?

Build a Shower Stall That Doesn't Leak

Build a Shower Stall That Doesn't Leak

Many different approaches have been used to try to build a shower stall that doesn't leak. Shower pans of lead and copper were used for several years. Mixing metal, ceMent and water often lead to failure, maybe at twenty years, maybe sooner. Then some installers used hot mopped asphalt over concrete with varying success. Some installers still use each of those methods.

Build a Shower Stall That Doesn't Leak

Build a Shower Stall That Doesn't Leak

Today there are several methods to build a shower pan that promises a leak proof shower for a long time. The promise looks good and time will tell how these various methods work.

Tile Ready Shower Pans

Three companies including Tile Redi, Schluter and Wedi build systems that use polyurethane or foam and waterproof membranes to build bases upon which tile is then set. The only mortar used is as a base for the shower pan included as part of the system.

These systems all eliminate some of the skill required for building a masonry shower but at a cost. The cost of these systems is higher than a conventional shower, but the shower goes together Faster which is a distinct advanTAGe in some situations.

Fiberglass Pans

Consider a fiberglass or acrylic shower stall. You don't get the look and feel of a ceramic shower, but the cost is less. The cheaper shower stalls wear fAirly quickly and don't have as long a life as a tile shower, provided the tile shower doesn't start leaking.

Conventional Masonry Showers

Most ceramic showers are still built using masonry construction. A masonry shower pan is built in this manner. A solid base or subfloor is required. A shower drain is rough set in place. The shower pan has two sets of drain holes, a lower set and an upper set. Then a layer of mortar is put down sloped to the bottom drain holes. Pea gravel or broken tiles are placed over the drain holes to keep them open. Then a special vinyl sheet is placed over the mortar layer and glued to the drain base.

The vinyl membrane is the key to the shower base. You must realize that the tile and grout surface you see on a shower floor are not waterproof. Water seeps through the shower floor and migrates down to the membrane and then down the sloped membrane to the bottom drain holes.

Above the vinyl membrane, another layer of mortar is poured to serve as the base for the ceramic tile. After that base cures, the tile is set and grouted on top even with the drain. The construction of the curb is critical too. Around the curb and in the corners of the floor are places where the membrane can crack and leak. Then the walls and ceiling are built.

Some of the modern systems available today will continue to change the way showers are constructed. Most make shower construction simpler. It still seems that for the immediate future some form of the conventional shower will still be the standard. When carefully built using modern materials, a conventional masonry shower will work perfectly for many years.

Shower Curtains Vs Bathroom Glass Shower Doors - My Comparison

Shower Curtains Vs Bathroom Glass Shower Doors - My Comparison

While upgrading the bathroom, many are confronted with the option of putting in shower curtains or bathroom glass shower doors. Before selecting one over the other however, it's essential for you to look at the pros and cons. Why? Because making the incorrect selection now could have expensive or bothersome repercussions in the future.

Shower Curtains Vs Bathroom Glass Shower Doors - My Comparison

Shower Curtains Vs Bathroom Glass Shower Doors - My Comparison

Shower Curtains Vs Bathroom Glass Shower Doors - My Comparison

Shower Curtains Vs Bathroom Glass Shower Doors - My Comparison

Shower Curtains

The main advanTAGe of curtains is obviously that they're affordable and simple to interchange. Not only this, but they're generally readily available in departMent outlets as well as numerous store locations. Additionally, they're available in a substantial assortMent of designs, hues and textures, so that complementing your current bathroom décor.

Moreover, being inexpensive, they may be changed once they get outdated or just when a person desires a big change of style.

There are some drawbacks however. For instance, when they're left outside the bathtub, they will drip everywhere which makes mess and creates a safety hazard. Shower curtains also often develop mildew and mold. Additionally, older ones made from PVC are known to contain toxins, which are hazardous to one's health.

Shower Doors

These are a far more costly option to shower curtains, however they will have numerous key advanTAGes over curtains. For instance, a strong shower door or frameless shower screen can last a long time, when compared with shower curtains that must definitely be constantly replaced.

They will also be super easy to wash simply because they don't attract mold like curtains do. All they decide to try clean is a touch glass cleaner along with a rag or sponge. Even though they aren't obtainable in as numerous colors and designs as shower curtains, you may still find many convenient and stylish designs to select from.

The drawback to bath doors, apart from being extra pricey to install, is they do have a tendency to collect scum in and all over the shower door tracks and sides. In the event that these spots are not continuously wiped clean, the accumulation could grow to be extremely unattractive, as well as challenging to get rid of. The continual mistreatment that they go through (moving and slamming) may also lead to them to becoming noisy and rickety. When they're improperly taken care of or become broken in some alternative manner, upgrading them is costly.

In the long run, choosing bathroom glass shower doors over curtains depends on specific things such as your bathroom décor, budget, how long you want them to last and your own style.

Handling Your Own Shower Drain Installation Project

Handling Your Own Shower Drain Installation Project

Upgrading a bathroom is one of the more popular home improveMent projects. Handling the plumbing for draining your shower can be exceedingly simple unless you go overboard.

Handling Your Own Shower Drain Installation Project

Handling Your Own Shower Drain Installation Project

Whether you are a bathtub or shower person, most people look for shower only options when buying a home. This simple fact means more than a few homeowners spend a weekend upgrading or installing showers in their bathrooms. Fortunately for you, it is a fAirly simple process.

A collector or pan refers to the horizontal surface located at the bottom of the shower. The collector typically consists of a non-slip surface slightly banked towards the center or wherever the drain is located. Combined with three to four inch walls around the side, the goal of your shower drainage plumbing is to get the water to flow to and down the drain.

You can physically build a collector for your new shower, but you really need to think about it. Do you really want to get into the complications of getting the sloping correct, not to Mention making sure every aspect of it is waterproof? And I mean every aspect! It is much easier to simply buy a pre-cast collector online or at your local Lowes, Home Depot or hardware store. Building one might sound like a great idea, but you will probably feel differently after a couple of hours.

Regardless of how you go about getting a pan, you should make every effort to use one that has the drain located in the same spot as the original pan. Moving the drain pipes can be a task, particularly if the builder used a unique framing structure. If you are determined to move the drain, you are going to have to cut back the pipe or lengthen it, which may mean ripping up large chunks of the floor. Put another way, you are going to be looking at a multiple weekend project.

Assuming we have our drain lined up, the actual hook up is fAirly simple. The drainage pipe should be facing vertical up to the collector. It will often look like a "U", which means it acts as a cleanout to keep nasty smells from coming back up from the drain. To connect the drain, you are going to create a water tight connection between a drain cap on the top of the pan and the drainage pipe. Systems vary, but you are typically going to do this by putting a coupling piece on the top of the drainage pipe. This is then covered with gaskets and literally screwed into the drain cap. The drain cap should act as a locknut, to wit, it screws directly onto the coupling.

The tricky part of this process is getting your drain cap to fit into a watertight position in the pan. This is accomplished by backing off the drain cap once you are sure everything fits together. At that point, you put plumbers putty around the underside of the cap and then screw it back on. The putty should form a tight seal between the cap and the shower pan, which keeps water from trickling under it and into the framing under the shower.

Obviously, bathroom showers come in a wide variety of styles these days. If you purchase a collector, they almost always come with plumbing instructions or the store can note anything unusual you should know. It sounds complex, but is typically pretty straight forward. Have fun!

Cottage Style Decorating Can Turn Your Bathroom Into A Seaside Retreat

CotTAGe style decorating provides a relaxing and unique atmosphere and is perfect for any bathroom, even ones that aren't in a cotTAGe! This design with its crisp light colors and seaside accessories will make your bathroom the most popular room in the house. Just Watch out when you decorate with this style because you may find that people are spending more time than ever in the bathroom!

Cottage Style Decorating Can Turn Your Bathroom Into A Seaside Retreat

The first thing you want to do with your cottage decor is decided on the colors. Typically, you want to use light colors like crisp whites or cream but you can also opt for a very pale blue or even a pale green to give your bathroom the right look. No matter what color you choose to paint the walls, be sure that you keep a few sWatches because you'll need them when you go outShop for shower curtains and bath mats.

Speaking of which, the big accessories in any bathroom are towels, shower curtains and bath mats. When you go looking for the bathmat, be sure that you get one that matches the overall colors in your room. You can also try buying short pile rugs or organic mats that are in natural colors.

When looking for your shower curtain and window curtains you might try to get a package deal with matching fabrics. Sometimes the curtains that have a seashell pattern or the scene of an ocean can look great with your cottage style decorating theme, but if you want a more sophisticated look you might try to go for just a plain white curtain that has maybe some lace on eyelet |the bottom or a white on white pattern. This way you can focus more on the accessories in the room and not have the shower curtain be the big attention getter.

Towels can really add some soft decor to your cottage style bathroom and there are many different kinds you can buy as well as to for ways to display them. Try to find towels that have a subtle cottage related pattern embroidered on the edge. Perhaps some seagulls, or shells? If you can't find this than some plain, good quality towels that match the colors in your bathroom will work great. These can be displayed hanging from towel racks but can also be very effective if you roll them up into a tube shape and stack them on top of each other either on you or the entity or on a shelf or in a large basket onthe floor.

One thing about bathrooms is that there's not a lot of room to display accessories so you're pretty much limited to the vanity and any shells you have. If you have enough room, you might consider a small baker's rack that you can stick in the corner to add accessories on. Some accessories that look great in a cottage style bathroom includes dishes or bowls filled with seashells, large conch shells strategically placed, and even vintage vanity items such as old colorful display packages for toiletries.

Cottage style decorating can be used in any bathroom, and not necessarily only those that are located in cottages. So if you want the relaxing and unique look of a cottage vacation in your home, why not try decorating your bathroom with cottage decor?

10 Ways to Get a Shower on the Road

10 Ways to Get a Shower on the Road

Hello travelers, people living out of a vehicle and other awesome folks, here are 10 Ways to Get a good Shower On The Road.

10 Ways to Get a Shower on the Road

10 Ways to Get a Shower on the Road

10 Ways to Get a Shower on the Road

10 Ways to Get a Shower on the Road

10 Ways to Get a Shower on the Road

1) At a campground Campground showers vary from one place to the next. Some are excellent, some use solar power so you are out of luck if it's after dark, and others are not heated at all. Water pressure is also a variable. Some have consistent water pressure while others will only get a weak stream when someone hops into the shower next to you or runs the sink. Campground showers can vary from deluxe with your own private changing room to just a primitive curtain or in rare instances, nothing at all. Some are well kept and impeccably clean and others you get to share with a few spiders and other mystery guests.

2)A community pool is another option. You may have to pay a few bucks to use the pool, but the showers are generally free. And hey, why not go swimming while you're at it? They usually only accept cash and hours are limited.

3) Get a 5 gallon solar shower These are pretty cheap, usually less than $ 20 for a simple one, and can be quite useful when you're roughing it. If you leave it in the sun for a few hours you'll have a hot shower. If it's not hot enough, a cup of near boiling water should do the trick. Just don't burn yourself! If privacy is still a concern, for around $ 70 you can get a portable privacy shelter, such as the Texsport Deluxe Camp Shower/Shelter Combo. It works great for car camping.

4) The Only 465 Stainless SteelSprayer can be used as a medium pressure camp shower. Several people have comMented they place it on a stove top burner and heat it up, then forward hatch it and then it's shower time. My friend tried this by pouring hot water into a plastic sprayer 2 gallon tank that he had and it made a great shower. It uses about 40 ounces per minute so that is a 6 minute shower using only two gallons. Another suggestion is to shower with Dawn Direct Foam soap instead of bar soap, then when it's empty, you can refill it with your own scented soap and distilled water. The foaming lather soap won't be affected by hard water. And it works for dishes too.

5) Get a day pass to a local fitness club. They usually run just $ 5 to $ 10, have really niceshowers, and there is no excuse not to get a great workout while you're at it!

6) Stop at a road house or large gas station such as Flying J, TA or Pilot, and other road trip stops with aMenities for travelers and truckers alike. These tend to be some of the nicest showers you can get on the road as you get your own private bathroom with plenty of hot water and water pressure. Plus you get your own sink and toilet. Towels and soap are usually provided though you're welcome to bring your own Supplies. The cost is usually between $ 5 and $ 10 USD. If you're traveling with your significant other, they're usually willing to let you pay the one fee for a shared room. If you're a little hard up for cash and feeling brave, you can also try asking at trucker if he or she has an extra> shower coupon. Truckers often get free shower coupons when they buy gas and may have an extra to give away (or sell for a buck or two).

7) Visit a friend, relative or make new acquaintance and ask to use their shower... sure, you might get a funny look, but what are friends for?

8) Try the "It Makes Sense Shower head."You still need to water Supply, but this device will help you save water. You can take a hot shower using very little water which is helpful when you're on the road, so long as you don't mind the chill in between the water spray. It has a chain to pull to adjust the flow of the water from a full spray to a trickle while you lather. It's similar to a navy shower, and great for preserving water.

9)Zodi Hot Tap Single Burner Travel Shower runs off propane and 4 D batteries, so you can get a hot shower any time of day at the push of a button. It holds 4 gallons of water which is good for a 10 minute shower. Costs about $ 130

10) Hotels with swimming pools will sometimes let you use their pool for a small fee, and usually have public showers.

Shower Curtains-Do We Actually Need Them?

Shower Curtains-Do We Actually Need Them?

Shower Curtains are either a necessary item for our bathrooms or just another added piece of decoration, but do we actually need them? The answer is Yes, simply put shower curtains provide a no nonsense approach to keeping our bathrooms and other wet areas typically clean and dry. They can be used as a decorative piece or alternatively we can use them purely and simply as a functional curtain.

Shower Curtains-Do We Actually Need Them?

Shower Curtains-Do We Actually Need Them?

The current trend towards shower curtains is now to basically use either a polyester or nylon curtain, this type of material will endure high temperatures, moisture and will handle as much washing in a machine as is necessary. Eucalyptus oil to little in the wash will do wonders. Many new shower curtains asin a vast array of designs including plain voile or to the more dramatic contemporary designs.

Themed shower curtains are also very popular as this enables you to create a specific feel in the bathroom for a short period of time, for example Christmas or Easter, Thanksgiving day, they are relatively inexpensive for what they are and are usually packaged as a ready made item. When purchasing new shower curtains always ensure that you have allowed extra on the drop of the curtain to make sure that it is covering the area completely, there is nothing worse than a half masted shower curtains.

These shower curtains can either be installed on a rod using rod and rings, or alternatively they can be installeda specialized curtain rod using either pinch pleat or pencil pleat curtains, for my information read our "how to make curtains -includes secret fabric formula" tutorial. I have seen many shower curtains in my clients homes that have basically transformed a Tired bathroom into a place of brightness and atmosphere.

One major factor you should consider when purchasing new shower curtains is to ask the salesperson for advice, there are many new fabrics that are now being used and some of these are mildew resistant, this type of material has been chemically treated in the manufacturing process to reduce the growth of mould. If you are looking at natural shower curtain than hemp is what you should choose, this is nowbecoming more and more available in many different styles and shapes. Hemp shower curtains do require more washing but the overall softer look is well worth it.

So remember when choosing your next shower curtains always consider what material you will use, the color or theme and most importantly the size of the area it needs to cover.

Curtain Room Dividers

Curtain dividers can be used in many ways. Young teenage girls generally prefer to use them to add a sense of style to their rooms, while at the same time creating a more private space for "hanging out." On a larger scale, businesses use large vinyl curtains to separate certain portions of a large room or to partition off areas for other uses.

If you have young children, you will see the usefulness of curtain room dividers. Young children generally do not like sharing their room. Shower Curtains: The Perfect Facelift for Your Bathroom

Shower Curtains: The Perfect Facelift for Your Bathroom

Looking for a quick makeover for your home? Start with your bathroom! Installing a new shower curtain can be the coolest way to cheer up your bathroom without investing a lot of money in the process. There are many styles of shower curtains to choose from, and you may be surprised at how dramatically a simple shower curtain can change the dynamics of a room. You can choose shower curtains that will stand out from the rest of your bathroom's colors, or you can choose one that provides a subtler match. It's all up to you: the possibilities are virtually endless!

Shower Curtains: The Perfect Facelift for Your Bathroom

Shower Curtains: The Perfect Facelift for Your Bathroom

If you are Tired of cleaning up your shower enclosure--and anyone that has been forced to combat soap scum before is likely darn Tired of it--will find shower curtains to be an effective solution to this issue. Shower enclosures, as well as shower curtains, accumulated humidity and, after a while, they become ugly. The difference is that changing shower curtains costs almost nothing compared to changing a glass or acrylic shower enclosure.

Sometimes people dismiss shower curtains as being cheap and generic, but when you consider the wide variety of styles and price tiers you'll find that curtains are hardly limited to cheap white vinyl curtains. If you have children, you can choose a nice shower curtain with dolphins, little Fish or funny ducks printed on it, or you can go with more "formal" designs, likegeometric patterns or lines. You can even choose a loud color to make your festive bathroom!

Bathroom shower curtains are made of different types of washable fabrics, including polyester, plastic and even cotton. Most of them have a weight attached at its bottom to avoid the "shower curtain effect" (which is the effect of the curtain unpleasantly wrinkling de-formation and/or sticking to your leg when you take a shower). Most shower curtains are also waterproofed, and it is also possible to attach an waterproof liner to your shower curtain if you're using a fabric curtain.

Another advanTAGe of the use of shower curtains in your bathroom is that they don't need you to drill any holes onyour walls: just get a spring loaded rod, adjust its size to fit between two walls and suspend your curtain from it by using hooks or rings. This ease of installation also saves you money by allowing you to do it by yourself rather than paying someone to install it.

Dots, stripes, waves, animals and many other designs are available, ensuring you will find shower curtains that fit virtually every need, even if your design preferences can be considered unique or offbeat. Nautical themed curtains as well as the old standby, known as the rubber ducky are very popular, but nowadays you can find every design you like; I have even seen shower curtains featuring Mexican hats! And, if you are really specific, you could look into having a> curtain custom designed specifically for you. Wait no more, and provide an exciting new look to your bathroom with new showercurtains!

Process of Installing a Stand Up Shower

Process of Installing a Stand Up Shower

Whether replacing an inconvenient and little-used bathtub, or adding a facility in a previously un-plumbed area, installing a stand up shower is one of the simplest and easiest projects the home restorer can take on. The process is straight-forward and the minimal expense. All the big-box Home Stores have everything you will need for the Job.

Process of Installing a Stand Up Shower

Process of Installing a Stand Up Shower

If a tub is being replaced, the old one needs to be removed, along with the subflooring which will undoubtedly be damaged and infected with mold from water getting past the caulking around the tub. This is a good time to put a new floor, vinyl or tile in the bathroom; half of the work is already done. You can use the existing plumbing, with some modification, when a tub is replaced. If it is a stand up shower in a newlocation, drain pipe and the hot and cold water pipes will have to be run to the room. In most jurisdictions a licensed plumber will have to do this part of the Job, and an inspector brought in to sign off on it.

Once the new subfloor is installed, and the necessary drywall replaced, the shower tray can be installed. The method of installation varies with the tray design. Some will require a ceMent or mortar base underneath the tray, some are strong enough to sit directly on the floor without flexing. Almost all require the use of a mastic as a final step to keep the tray from moving around. A standup shower needs to be able to bear the weight of any person without flexing and breaking the caulk bead.

The caulk bead is the most important part of any bathinstallation. Great care taken now, at the installation of the standup shower, will make future repAirs unnecessary. Care must also be taken in the caulking around the shower controls. They are designed to stay dry inside if they are installed correctly, so these are some instructions that really need to be read carefully.

If the space available for the shower is larger than the shower pan that is selected, then some creative carpentry and tilework can be used to enhance the usefulness of the installation. One popular choice is to frame up a bench or seat that can be tiled to match the rest of the room, rendering the standup shower also a sit-down shower, for those who need one.

Tiling a Shower Stall Starts with a Shower Pan

Tiling a Shower Stall Starts with a Shower Pan

The most important feature in a ceramic tile shower stall is the shower pan. The shower pan channels water to the drain and prevents the shower from leaking. Consequently it is critical that the shower pan be installed correctly and that it is waterproof and durable.

The shower pan is actually a mortar bed consisting of a flexible shower pan liner sandwiched between two layers of mortar. The shower stall walls are framed with 2 x 4 studding and faced with some type of backerboard underlayMent designed for receiving ceramic tile.

The installation of a shower pan starts with the spreading of a layer of mortar. The mortar needs to be slopedproperly to enable water to run off towards the drain. The flexible plastic shower pan membrane liner is then installed on top of the sloped mortar bed.

The shower pan membrane liner should be cut to size and hand molded into the shower base.

Note: The shower pan should be cut to size such that several extra inches of shower pan material can be run up the shower stall side walls to enable the shower pan to be secured with nails to the studs. Also, the shower pan should be installed prior to the installation of backerboard on the shower walls.

After the shower pan membrane is secured, the second layer of mortar should be installed in the base of the shower, again maintaining the slopeof the mortar towards the drain.

Once the shower pan mortar bed has set up, you can install the backerboard to the walls and begin to install the ceramic tiles.

Start the installation of tiles in the center of the shower pan area and work your way outwards.

Next, install ceramic tiles on the walls. Use a plumb line to run straight lines down the length of the walls. Position the plumb line at the ceiling and centered on a wall. Snap the line, so that you have a vertical line running the length of the wall.

Next, Install your tiles outwards from the line toward the edges of the wall. Repeat this process for all the walls.

For tile cutting, a wet saw works best, as you can obtain very accurate cuts and minimize ceramic tile waste.

Afterthe ceramic tile has had 24-48 hours to set up, can then be applied grout to the tile.

Finally a sealer should be used on the grout to minimize moisture seeping through the grout lines.

For more information on installing a shower pan membrane liner, see the Shower Pan Membrane Liner Installation EBook from http://www.HomeAdditionPlus.com The Shower Pan Membrane Liner EBook will quickly teach you the step-by-step process for installing the shower pan membrane liner correctly. It includes instructions on framing the shower stall, pouring the pre-slope and base mortar shower , and installing the shower pan membrane liner.

How to Install the Tile Shower Drain

How to Install the Tile Shower Drain

The tile shower drain is tricky and much of the tricky part is buried in the shower pan. You see the whole shower pan is designed to route all the water to the drain. All the water includes the part that leaks right through the floor. That happens because tile floors are never waterproof. Some water ends up passing right through the floor.

How to Install the Tile Shower Drain

How to Install the Tile Shower Drain

How to Install the Tile Shower Drain

How to Install the Tile Shower Drain

Includes The drain holes that are on two layers. The top layer you can easily see. The lower layer is down on the floor.

Here's how it works.

Usually the drain is attached to the drain pipe so the drain base sits right on the subfloor. Then you build a very important layer. It's a sloped mortar layer that slopes at about 1/4 inch per foot from the base of the drain up on the shower walls.

Then over that sloped layer is installed the real trick to a shower floor. A waterproof sheet membranes is set over the sloped mortar and then attached right on top of the drain base. That liner is sealed to the base so the water that makes it to the liner is routed right to the lower drain holes.

After the liner is fitted in all the corners, which is tricky, the next layer is installed.

The next layer is another mortar layer that is the basis for actually laying the floor tiles.

But wait ...

Wouldn't the mortar stop up the drain holes? How could you have drain holes that are down inside a "solid" masonry floor?

Tiling a shower is no doubt an ambitious undertaking. It is a challenge that many homeowners take on though. The most mysterious part of building a shower is the constructing of a shower pan. How do you keep it from leaking? Well, you can use a "prefabricated" shower pan and avoid the conventional masonry construction. But many folks tackle building a shower pan. The tile and especially grout are porous and the so a liner under the surface of the floor is needed to keep the water from damaging the area around the shower. When a shower pan leaks, some part of the waterproofing plan has failed.

A shower floor is constructed on top of a solid base. It could be subfloor or it could be real. A special shower drain is set in place first. This drain has two sets of drain holes, one above the other. A layer of masonry is poured into place sloped to the bottom set of holes. Place on top of the sloped mortar a special vinyl membranes. This vinyl sheet is actually the waterproof layer of the floor.

The diaphragm is glued to the base of the drain so you then have a waterproof liner which is run up the wall several inches too.

Now above the liner to second layer of mortar is poured that is sloped toward the drain to serve as the basis for the tile. After the mortar dries for acouple of days the tile is set using thinset adhesive. Then the tile is grouted and the floor is ready.

Ceiling

If you will tile the ceiling, this step comes next. You can support the ceiling tiles with strips of plywood over each course. Hold the strips with lengths of 2 x 4 wedged between the shower pan and the ceiling.

Walls

Mark lines on the back wall and then on the sides. You'll need horizontal and vertical lines. If the shower walls partially enclose the front of the shower, you can use the back corners as the vertical working lines as long as the walls are plumb.

Spread adhesive on the back wall and set the tiles until complete. Then complete the sides and then the front. Put in place any fixtures like soap dishes as you movearound. Finally, complete the trim around the door or threshold.

A ceramic tile shower is a challenging project but one that many homeowners successfully tackle.
